SEPTEMBER 18 WORLD EVENTS

SEPTEMBER 18 WORLD EVENTS

US Air Force Day on the 18th September:

US Air Force Day is celebrated annually on September 18th to honour the men and women of the US Air Force and recognize their contributions to national security and global peace.

US Air Force was established on 18, September 1947, by the National Security Act of 1947, which separated it from the US Army and the Marine branch of the US, just after the closure of World War II. The US Air Force has played a vital role in every major US conflict since World War II. Today, airmen continue to defend the US and its allies around the world.

The U.S. Army Signal Corps was formed in 1907 as an aeronautical division that acted as a precursor to the U.S. Air Force. Both CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) and US Air Force Day emanated from the National Security Act of 1947 as a post-World War II by US President Harry S. Truman.

US National Day Of Civic Hacking:

National Day of Civic Hacking is celebrated annually on September 18th to bring together people of all skill levels to use technology to solve community problems. It is a nationwide day of action in the U.S. created by the Code for America Brigades, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and Secondmuse in collaboration with various federal agencies.

Civic hackers use their digital skills to positively impact their communities, from developing apps to improve access to government services to designing websites that make it easier for  US natives to get involved in local government.

World Water Monitoring Day:

World Water Monitoring Day was established by America’s Clean Water Foundation in 2003 with the aim of raising awareness of the issues related to water pollution and encouraging people to test the water of their local bodies across the globe. The test includes dissolved oxygen (DO), as well as clarity (turbidity), acidity (pH), and temperature. The current sponsor of World Water Monitoring Day is Earth Echo International.

In the US it was earlier celebrated on the 18th of October, the day on which the US Clean Water Act of 1972 was enacted by Congress for the purpose of restoring and protecting the water resources in the country. However, the date ended up being changed in 2007 because they wanted to encourage people to participate in all parts of the world, including where temperatures hit freezing conditions at that time.

Read An E-Book Day: Mobile App

Read An E-Book was first celebrated internationally on 18 September 2014, by a major eBook distributor OverDrive. This day encourages ebooks which are easily accessible to readers through Mobile App and Kindle devices. By preferring ebooks over traditional paper books there are many benefits such as a significant reduction in the weight of the School Bag, access to a wide variety of ebooks in less time and effort, no need to visit the local libraries and most importantly it checks the environmental pollution as it drastically lessens the felling of the trees for the manufacturing of papers. The use of E-Books
through Mobile App play a vital role in sustaining the Earth's ecosystem, reducing Global Warming, and Climate Change.

The geocentric satellite was launched into Earth's orbit by a Vanguard rocket, built by Glenn L. Martin Company, which is now known as Lockheed-Martin. It was the first US satellite to carry a magnetometer and the first to collect data on solar X-ray radiation.

VOLKSWAGEN EMISSIONS SCANDAL: 18 SEPT 2015

On 18 September 2015, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a notice to Volkswagen that it had cheated on emissions tests. Volkswagen had programmed its cars to turn on pollution controls only during testing. In real-world driving, the cars emitted up to 40 times more pollution than allowed by law.

UNESCO Designates Ancient Jericho Ruins as a World Heritage Site: Israel Annoyed

The United Nations World Heritage Committee voted Sunday to list the Tell es-Sultan archaeological site in Jericho as a “World Heritage Site in Palestine.” The Palestinian Authority welcomed the decision, while Israel expressed ire. Located in the Jordan Valley, Jericho is situated between the Jordan River to the east and Jerusalem to the west.

In 2010, Jericho celebrated being the oldest walled city in the world, dating back to the modern Stone Age.

The newly designated site, located in Jericho in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, contains ruins dating back to the ninth millennium BCE. Jericho itself is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world.

The Palestinian Authority Foreign Affairs Ministry welcomed the decision, lauding it as an acknowledgement of Jericho’s “cultural, economic, and political significance” and a testament to “10,000 years of human development,”

Historic Ukrainian sites in Kyiv and Lviv added to the UN danger list
Major historical sites in two Ukrainian cities are in danger of destruction due to the war with Russia, the UN's heritage body Unesco has said.

They include the iconic Saint Sophia Cathedral in the capital, Kyiv, and the medieval buildings of the city's Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery site.

The historic centre in the city of Lviv has also been placed on Unesco's List of World Heritage in Danger.

It said the conditions to fully protect the sites could not be met.

"Faced with the risk of direct attack, these sites are also vulnerable to the shockwaves caused by the bombing of the two cities," the group said its World Heritage Committee had concluded.

It added that the inclusion of the sites on the list was a reminder to UN member states about their responsibility to contribute to their protection and would "open the door" to further financial and technical aid.

Russia has assured the UN that its armed forces are taking "necessary precautions" to prevent damage, though this is disputed by Ukraine.
